Tuesday, 16th September 2008

Nicky Hayden finally confirmed at Ducati Marlboro for the 2009 MotoGP World Championship.

Just one day after scoring his first podium of the 2008 season, in Sunday’s Indianapolis Grand Prix, it has finally been officially announced that 2006 MotoGP world champion Nicky Hayden will join Ducati for 2009.

Hayden’s Ducati move, which will see the 27-year-old line-up alongside 2007 world champion Casey Stoner, has been considered a done deal for months. The American will make his debut on next year’s Desmosedici GP9 in a test immediately after the season-ending Valencia Grand Prix, on October 27th.

“We are really happy to have Nicky join us,” declared Claudio Domenicali, Ducati Corse CEO and Ducati Motor Holding Product Director. “We are certain that his never-say-die attitude, riding style and character will be great additions to our team in 2009. I would like to thank HRC for allowing Nicky to start testing our bike immediately after the Valencia Grand Prix.”

Although a Repsol Honda rider for his entire six-year grand prix career, there has been an increasing degree of inevitability about Hayden and Ducati joining forces, which began when the Italian marque first tried to sign the American towards the end of his title-winning season.

Hayden eventually chose to stick with Honda for a further two years – believing, like many, that the Japanese giant would be hard to beat during the start of the new 800cc era – just as it had been when the 990cc class began in 2002.

But it was Stoner, signed by Ducati after Hayden’s polite rejection, who romped to ten wins and the 2007 title, then provided the closest opposition to Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi during 2008.

By contrast Hayden, and to a lesser extent Honda, have struggled ever since the capacity cut – the Kentuckian claiming just four podiums since the end of 2006, while Honda has won only four races, all with Hayden’s team-mate Dani Pedrosa.

Many consider (rightly or wrongly) that Hayden hasn’t received the backing he deserves from Honda since the arrival of former 125 and double 250cc world champion Pedrosa.

                      Mossy’s back, and this time he’s aboard Honda’s ‘not-quite-a-streetfighter’ CB1000R in Italy.

Italy is legendary for style and chic and home to some world-famous brands such as Ducati, Ferrari, D&G and Gucci to name just a few. Taking full advantage of the Latin nation’s flair for design, Honda has cleverly involved the Italians with the new CB1000R street-bike. Being built at its Atessa plant near Rome, Honda is proudly championing the bike’s non-Japanese influence further by saying the CB is modelled and created by Europeans for Europeans. Although it’s also admitting it will sell the bikes worldwide if there’s enough demand for them.

It’s not the first time Honda has allowed ‘outsiders’ to play a part with the development of one of its bikes, and the effect is proving successful. That’s definitely the case with the style of the new CB1000R. It’s one of the best-looking Hondas made, and ever since being unveiled at the Milan show last year the CB has been hailed as a real success – aesthetically at least. The fashionable street-bike should have performance to match given the high spec it has. And thanks to many parts borrowed from the ‘07 and ‘08 Fireblades, the CB1000R ought to be a fantastic bike to ride.

I say ought to, because thanks to poor weather I can’t admit to being anything more than just very impressed by the bike. The launch of the Honda was largely blighted by rain, which restricted a full and proper test of the bike. And even though I did eventually get the chance of thrashing it for an hour on dry roads in the sun, that didn’t happen on the sort of routes I needed to form a full and final verdict.

I’m very confident that when I ride the CB again in ideal conditions, you won’t be able to me get off it as there’s plenty to praise the bike for. As I said, it’s a real head-turner. The sharp, inclined lines of its bodywork, even in the sombre olive-green hue all the test bikes were painted in, really do deserve attention. OK, it’s no Triumph Speed Triple or Aprilia Tuono, but that still can’t stop you admiring its sleek and sexy shape. The Honda is perhaps a bit too polished to be labelled as a street-fighter, but there’s still a hint of aggression about it.

The black finished engine, chassis and wheels help to create a moody and sophisticated air, and the single-sided swingarm is especially classy. It’s got quite a squat stance to aid the brutishness. Only the projector-beam inset in the triangular-shaped headlight was questionable in my book. But as I was to discover, a detail like that can’t dent your enthusiasm for the Honda.

As luck would have it, the day started as a dry one for the trip through the streets of Italy’s style and fashion capital, Milan. There the usual Honda qualities of poise and balance were obvious, and though Saturday morning traffic was hardly at gridlock level, it never presented much of a challenge for the 1000. The sit up and beg riding position lets you dominate the bike and boss it around with only the slightest persuasion. Combined with a good view of what’s ahead and what’s likely to be dealt with, traffic-busting is certainly a forte of the Honda. Plush suspension and friendly brakes also help with the feeling of security in the urban zone. Getting onto the arterial road complex heightened the need for anticipation thanks to the unpredictability of Milan’s drivers who were now out in greater number, but the CB just got on with the job of avoiding them more than competently. And then the rain came.

The moisture wasn’t exactly the end of the world, and did in fact help me to make a finer judgement on some of the Honda’s abilities. But it also restricted me from giving a view on how well it dealt with being pushed hard. The motor, based on the one fitted to the ’07 Fireblade was a great ally in these conditions. Even with reduced road grip, you can still use the in-line four without fear thanks to its user-friendly manners. Tuned more for torque than outright power, the motor is very tractable, with each tug on the throttle bringing a really linear build up of extra strength. The prompt and positive response makes increasing speed less daunting than it might be in these conditions. It will even pull from just 2000rpm readily and cleanly in top gear, and underlines the care and attention to detail that’s gone into the way it makes its power. Even wheelies are incredibly simple and straightforward because of the civility of the delivery. Friendly isn’t a word good enough to describe the manners of this engine.

Repsol Honda could make a complete U-turn and start the 2008 MotoGP season, at Qatar on Sunday night, using exactly the same RC212Vs that it finished last season with.

Rather than gaining ground with its all-new ‘08 racer during the off-season, Honda’s factory team has found itself in the unexpected situation of working its way back towards the proven 2007 design. The underperforming pneumatic-valve ‘08 engine was the first to go, prompting an ‘07 engine to be fitted inside the ‘08 chassis for much of 2008 pre-season testing. But even that compromise failed to trouble the impressive pace of the leading satellite
Hondariders – using complete 2007 bikes – during last week’s Qatar night test, when factory riders
Nicky Haydenand Dani Pedrosa were left just seventh and 13th fastest.
“We’ve tried many different things but at the moment we aren’t getting the results we were expecting. The main problem is grip,” said Pedrosa at the end of the final pre-season test. “The tyres are fine, you can see that because the guys with the 2007 Hondas and Michelins are fast, so it’s something else.”To try and cure its problems, Hayden and Pedrosa will be given a 2007 machine each to compare against the ‘08 chassis/’07 engine package – that they had been expecting to start the new season with – when free practice for this weekend’s Qatar night race begins on Friday evening. After a slow start, Pedrosa took last year’s RC212V to second in the world championship standings with two race victories – including the Valencia season finale. The bike with which Repsol Honda finished last season was then duplicated and given to the satellite teams for this year, while HRC handed Hayden and Pedrosa what has turned out to be a troubled all-new model.Honda had already announced that its pneumatic-valve engine, for which the ‘08 chassis was originally designed, will not be present this weekend and only be raced once its performance has improved

Close your eyes just a fraction, squint a little, take a good look at the 2008 Honda CBR600RR and you could be forgiven for thinking you were looking at Nicky Hayden’s MotoGP bike. The same clean lines, beefy swing arm and sharp profile adorn both motorcycles. Dual Stage Fuel Injection, Pro-Link rear suspension and HESD electronic steering damper, drool drool. Honda make no bones about the fact that MotoGP is where they test designs for their new bikes and it shows. Whether you can ride one as quickly as Nicky is another matter, but feel free to try.

What was unaffordable, cutting edge technology just a few years ago now sits resplendent on a bike you can pick up from a dealers and ride away for less than ten grand. Honda have continued their process of slow refinement and development with the CBR 600 and this year’s model is almost identical to last years, slightly heavier, up a few pounds from 2007 (depending on which Honda site you get info from) and the rake has been changed slightly from 23.7 degrees to 23.55 – hardly enough to be noticeable. Honda are selling their 2007 model alongside the 2008 and with so few small changes apart from the color scheme, they have sensibly priced the 2008 a mere $100 more than the ’07. Apparently Honda’s current policy is to only make significant model changes every second year and 2007 saw a major revamp. It does look good in black though.

The Honda CBR 600 has had consistently good reviews since they introduced the model and with good reason. There are a selection of reviews from the 2007 launch at the bottom of the page – still applicable as the CBR 600RR has not had any significant changes this year. CBR600’s have been winning accolades and awards all round the world since 1987.

The CBR600 was the club racer’s choice the moment it was released. Cheap, fast straight out of the box, and reliable. Easy to set up doesn’t even come close. Literally open the crate, put it together and you have a competitive machine. On top of that, they hardly ever blow up. In 2007, Ian Hutchinson broke the Isle of Man TT race record in the Supersport/Junior class with a race winning 123.225 mph average speed on the HM Plant Honda CBR 600 – On what is basically the same bike you or I can buy.

If you want a fast, reliable mid-sized sports bike, the Honda CBR 600RR is hard to beat.

India’s (and also the World’s) largest two-wheeler manufacturer, Hero Honda Motors Ltd (HHML) has launched its two crore (20 millionth) bike in the country.According to the company press release (Dated: October 12, 2007):,
“The 20th million motorcycle was unveiled at a glittering ceremony here today, by Mr. Brijmohan Lall, Chairman, HHML, Mr. Pawan Munjal, MD & CEO, HHML, and Hero Honda brand ambassador and Bollywood superstar Mr. Hrithik Roshan.”Mr. Pawan Munjal, says
There are not many countries in the world with a population of two crore people, and here we are – a Company with an unprecedented customer base of two crore, and growing. In a country of a billion people, it signifies a Hero Honda bike in every 50 people. This achievement is indeed reflective of the brand loyalty and the trust that Hero Honda has built amongst its customers over the years.”
To commemorate this achievement, Hero Honda has announced a campaign called “Hero Honda Country”, which aims to touch the hearts and minds of customers across the length and breadth of the nation (which basically means that Hero Honda wants to reinforce its nunber one position in the minds of the India consumer). As part of the campaign, an event called “HERO HONDA BIKE-A-THON” has been flagged-off simultaneously from eight cities – Srinagar, Kolhapur, Katihar, Kolkata, Kakinada, Kanyakumari, Chennai and Mangalore. The bikers, riding a range of Hero Honda bikes, will traverse thousands of kilometers, before converging near Delhi towards the end of this month.Great going Hero Honda. But how about setting aside a few crores of Rupees for an R&D of your own..?? Agreed matching the Honda Technology isn’t easy but what if tomorrow Honda decides to part ways.

A look at what’s wrong with the Japanese Companies in India.. Part I: Yamaha India

The above graphic shows how Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki don’t even together account for 10% of the Indian two wheeler market. So what’s wrong for these Japanese companies who once taught Bajaj and TVS the trade of making two wheelers. What’s ailing these Japanese Two wheeler maker..??

Part I: What’s ailing Yamaha India
The mere mention of the brand name “Yamaha” evokes a feeling among bike lovers which is diffcult to describe. The legend of its yesteryear superstars namely the RD350 and the RX100 still manages to overshadow the fact that Yamaha India has made straight losses since 2001.

There are many bikers around in the country who still venerate the Yamaha brand. It wouldn’t be surprising if many of them have never owned a Yamaha Before. Such is the equity of brand Yamaha in India.

Yamaha happens to be the World number two in terms of two wheeler sales after Honda. But in spite of having its presence in India since the mid eighties, Yamaha at present has a market share of just around 3 %.

Needless to say that so far Yamaha has performed below expectations in India.

Lets try to find what has gone wrong for Yamaha India..??

Product LineupLets first look at the Yamaha Products in India.. We have the

100 C.C (economizers)

Crux
Libero G5
Alba (recently launched)
125 C.C

Gladiator (with its “Type J.A” variant)

And….??Nothing else.. at least till now..!!

Ask any Tom Dick and Harry on any Indian street to associate the first word that comes across his mind with “Yamaha”. I can safely bet my money that the answer will invariably be “Speed, Power, Performace”.

After the RX100 and the RD350, by no means can Yamaha make us believe that its 100 cc and 125 cc bikes are the best that it can do in India.

Administrative Problems.

In 2001, Yamaha India bought majority stake in Escorts, its erstwhile JV partner and started on its own as fully owned Japanese subsidiary. But it did not mean that Yamaha India got a fresh start in 2001. Yamaha India had to carry along the Escorts legacy in the form of its workers who previously used to work under Escorts. This is a problem that Yamaha India hasn’t been able to sort out even today.

If you don’t understand how that can be a problem, just try to teach computers to your grandpa and you will understand what I mean. Times had changed since Escorts-Yamaha used to churn out the RX100. Changing times means a different approach to work which requires a change in the mindset of the workers at Yamaha’s plant. And this is one aspect which the new Japanese Bosses at Yamaha India haven’t been able to address so far.

Inefficient and Archaic Dealerships:

Compared to the new and swanky showrooms of its competitors, majority of the dealers and showrooms of Yamaha India looks like it still belongs to the “Licence Raj” days. These dealerships have been in operational since Escorts-Yamaha days. With concepts like “Pro-Biking” showrooms of Bajaj which have been designed to provide a rich experience to the biker, Yamaha India still has a lot to pick up.

Marketing Disaster:

Similar to the how (according to me) the Honda Unicron, has been a marketing failure in India, virtually every product from Yamaha can be a case study for failed Marketing effort. After marketing research the next steps of marketing can be summed up as

Segmentation
Targeting and
Positioning

First of all Marketing Dept. of Yamaha picked up the wrong Segment (100 cc segment) to play in, targeted the wrong customers (actually it beats me to decipher who is Yamaha’s 100 cc target customer) and doesn’t have a strong and clear Positing statement for its products.

Lets try to figure out “What is the positioning statement of Yamaha India’s motorcycles..” From the wheelie popping Gladiator 125 cc ads featuring , John Abraham and the latest ad of the 100 cc Alba here a Girl gets the tattoo of the 100 cc Yamaha Alba on her back, we can say that Yamaha India’s bike are positioned as fast and with sexy designs.

Sexy looks for a 100 cc commuter..?? Wheelies from a 125 cc executive commuter..?? Yeah, that’s what we need. Probably you have the answer now.

What can we expect from the future..??

No matter how miserably Yamaha’s offerings’ have performed in India so far, Indians still have and probably will always have respect for any products from any Japanese Bike maker.

The day Yamaha India launches a proper performance bike, “desi” bike enthusiasts will sit up and take notice. There is no reason to believe that the World’s Second largest Two Wheeler maker can’t pull it off in India. According to me its just the matter of application and letting go of the past.

What is required is to think and start afresh. Let’s see for how long can Yamaha India keep us waiting.Inputs from: Business World

The $93-billion Honda Motor Company (HMC) will launch an array of products through its two subsidiaries —Hero Honda and Honda Motorcycle & Scooters India (HMSI) — to retain its combined 60% market share in the two-wheeler market. This is in response to rivals Bajaj Auto and TVS Motors’ new bikes on the twin-spark plug technology platform.

Honda Motor Company’s Southeast Asia head and the CEO of Honda SIEL Cars India Masahiro Takedagawa told ET on the sidelines of the 10th anniversary of Honda cars in India, “We are not sitting idle. We have our own strategy and will soon come out with a range of new bikes for the Indian market. I cannot disclose the products right now but these will be extensions of our new two-wheeler technology, which will be launched in the Indian market soon.”

Sources said HMC is contemplating to launch two-three new bikes through Hero Honda and HMSI in the festive month of October when sales spurt due to auspicious buying during Dussehra and Diwali. Hero Honda is likely to introduce new bikes between 130 cc and 150 cc.
(a higher engine displacement than Bajaj Auto and TVS Motors’ newly-launched bikes). A Hero Honda spokesperson refused to confirm the launch and said, “The company would not like to comment on future product launches.”

To counter threats by Bajaj Auto and TVS Motors, which aim to upgrade 100-cc customers to their 125-cc bikes, HMSI is likely to launch new bikes in the 100-cc segment based on new technology offerings, higher fuel efficiency and power. “We are planning to further increase out portfolio in the two-wheeler market and both companies (Hero Honda and HMSI) will complement each other in different two-wheeler segments. The new products will cater to different kinds of demands in the market,” Mr Takedagawa said.

HMC is keeping a wait and watch policy on the recent launches of Bajaj Auto and TVS Motors, which are targeted at gaining volumes in the market. Bajaj Auto launched the 125-cc bike ‘XCD 125′ on its patented DTSi technology on Sunday at Rs 41,000, about Rs 3,000 lower than the cheapest brand of Hero Honda. TVS Motors had also rolled out a new 125-cc bike Flame on the similar twin spark-based (CC-VTi) technology from its Hosur manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu, which will be launched commercially in October.
Via: The Economic Times
